Keeping our littlest ones up-to-date on their immunizations is everyone’s responsibility. Each year, we work with partners throughout the state during NIIW to spread the message about getting infant and toddler immunizations on time, every time. Since 1994, NIIW has been a way to focus attention on the benefits of maintaining high immunization rates in the community, state, and nationally.
National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) is April 21-28, 2018. NIIW highlights immunization achievements and the positive impact of vaccination on the lives of infants and children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that routine immunization of children born between 1994 and 2016 will prevent an estimated 381 million illnesses, 24.5 million hospitalizations, and 855,000 early deaths over the course of their lifetimes, at a net savings of $360 billion in direct costs and $1.65 trillion in total societal costs.
Immunize Nevada encourages our partners to observe NIIW by talking about the importance of childhood immunization through websites, social media channels and events at the state and local level, using the hashtag #ivax2protect. Healthcare professionals are on the front lines of the fight against vaccine-preventable diseases. According to CDC research, parents consistently identify healthcare professionals as their most trusted source of immunization information. Although the number of vaccines a child needs in the first two years may seem like a lot, doctors know a great deal about the human immune system, and they know that a healthy baby’s immune system can handle getting all vaccines when they are recommended. Research also shows that many parents make vaccine decisions before their baby is even born.
