COVID-19 deaths in the United States are disproportionately high in comparison to other industrialized nations. With a population of just over 3 million, Nevada’s COVID-19 total death toll stands at 4,522 as of February 8, 2021, equaling 1,468 deaths per million individuals in our state. Comparatively, the country of Japan, with a population of over 126 million, cites 6,395 total deaths attributed to COVID-19, or only 51 (fifty-one) deaths per million people. Why is this so?

Using a “just the facts” approach, reasons for the disparity will be discussed. Conspiracy theories, disinformation and propaganda promoting false cures, anti-mask and anti-vaccination movements will also be reviewed.

Use of the Nursing Process and critical thinking to separate fact from fiction will be explored with the goal of finding ways we can unify to practice good public health measures and defeat Sars-CoV-2, a virus that has been ravaging our state and nation for the past year.

Ample time for discussion will be provided to maximize participant engagement.
