Grades are in: Nevada's Immunization Report Card Sees Improvements

Each year the CDC conducts the National Immunization Survey (NIS) to estimate childhood and teen immunization rates. Immunize Nevada uses this data for our state immunization report card, and to see how we compare to the rest of the nation. The most recent survey data indicates many Nevada parents are protecting their children from vaccine-preventable diseases by making sure they are getting recommended vaccines. While we continue to see rates increase, there is room for improvement to ensure all children receive all vaccines at the recommended ages.

Becoming an Immunization Advocate: NIIW and Beyond

When I first started working in the world of immunizations, I presumed I would help people get vaccinated, provide resources to healthcare professionals, and be an expert community resource. Yes, we do all of those things, every day, at Immunize Nevada. But what I didn’t realize was the majority of my daily work would also include using my voice to dispel myths, remind people of diseases seen long ago, help parents navigate credible information on the internet, speak up online as a fact-producing warrior, and more. And yes, we do all of those things too.

Our BIG Impact

Doing big things is what Immunize Nevada is all about.

In fact, it’s one of our core values. We aim to “set big goals, persist in the face of challenges, take risks, and continue to look around the corner to uncover solutions.” As a statewide organization, whose offices span the Silver State, it takes bold people with big ideas to help keep Nevadans healthy.

Four-legged Friends Can Get The Flu Too!

We aren’t crying wolf- the flu is a serious matter. From the millions who come down with the flu each year (an estimated 25 million in 2016) to the hundreds of thousands that are hospitalized each year (310,000 in 2016 alone), it’s important to do our part to protect the ones we love from this preventable illness. That’s why it is recommended that everyone 6 months and older receive their seasonal flu shot every year.

Take a Risk and Invest in Health Care

Every year, we reset at the New Year and make investments and take risks. Whether we commit to saving more, starting a new job, or engaging in a fitness routine - we create goals, consciously.

But why do we dismiss the ability to make an investment in our health care? Why not take proactive steps to being a healthier you now and in the future? Sure, life gets in the way, but as a mom to a three-year old who practically licks the walls at daycare and someone vulnerable to catching every bug that floats around, we must start somewhere.
